Pilates is a form of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates aimed at improving movement function through core exercises, flexibility and body awareness.

The basis of Pilates is centered around being able to maintain a low grade contraction of your deep abdominal muscles – however there is a whole lot more to it than that! Fundamentally, Pilates aims at an individual being able to maintain control of their body position to optimize their function in positions that minimize the risk of injury.

Strength can also be gained through Pilates – whether it is strengthening the very important buttock muscles, building your shoulder muscles to improve strength or improving your abdominal muscles (different to your deep core muscles which work very differently).

Pilates can be modified to all ages and capabilities. It can be sport specific, work specific or used as rehab.
